Are you currently stationed in Germany and planning
to marry to a German citizen?
There are different ways to get married:
Option 1) is getting married in Germany at the city hall, which is what we did:
I (German citizen) contacted the city hall in my town (Rathaus) and let them know that we’re planning to get married. Since we already decided on a date I also asked them right away if we could save that particular date for us. My husband (American citizen) went to the legal office on post. There he was told that he needs to get an affidavit signed. This document proves your single-status. After that we both were told to bring additional documents like birth certficate and prove of citizenships.
The city hall will also let you know exactly what documents will have to be translated. Another thing that will be needed is a translator in case the American citizen doesn’t speak and undestand enough German. That person doesn’t have to be a professional translator. For the registration appointment before the wedding you can either go together (but then you’ll need a translator joining you as well) or the german citizen can go by him/herself. In that case you’ll need an offical permission from the American citizen tho, that proves that he/she wants to get married in Germany and is approving of this appointment.
By clicking on the follow link you’re able to download a List of Documents as well as the “permission-form” for your partner to schedule an appointment at the cityhall. I created that list since I would have found it way easier to prepare and get an idea of whats necessary back in the days when we got married π
I’m looking forward to help y’all π
